ANSWERS TO COMMON QUESTIONS REGARDING SITKA WHALE WATCHING AND WILDLIFE TOURS
1.
2.
3.
WHEN IS THE PEAK WHALE EXPEDITION SEASON?
SHORT ANSWER: April to May.
LONGER ANSWER: Different times of the year provide a better opportunity for different species. In April and May, you'll get the chance to witness the yearly migration of gray whales in Sitka Sound. This is the best whale viewing season in Sitka, as over 100 whales migrate through our sound during this period. These giants can congregate with up to 50 whales in a 1 square mile area, feeding in water as shallow as 10 feet deep. Join us to witness this once-a-year event!
From June to August, we often suggest booking a fishing trip rather than a dedicated whale trip to fully enhance your experience in Sitka, as we often see marine life and whales while fishing during that time of year (GO TO OUR FISHING PACKAGES BY CLICKING HERE. We do occasionally have dedicated whale trips this time of year but fishing is much more popular for our guests to do both.
WHAT WILDLIFE WILL WE SEE ON OUR TRIP?
SHORT ANSWER: Potentially whales, sea otters, bears, bald eagles, and/or marine birds
LONGER ANSWER: During your wildlife excursion, we'll look for the opportunity to see humpback whales breech, slap their tails, and even occasionally bubble-net feed. From time to time, we get to see orcas cruise through the islands surrounding Sitka. Sea lions, otters, bald eagles, bears, and other marine mammals are abundant in our waters and along our coastlines and we very often see these animals while searching for whales.
IS THIS EXCURSION FAMILY-FRIENDLY?
SHORT ANSWER: YES!
LONGER ANSWER: Captain Clay's daughter loves being on the boat. The boat is comfortable and has a v-birth that will allow your kids or teens to take a nap during the ride out. Clay is a family man who loves giving other families core memories that will last a lifetime. We do, however, recommend that before the trip you test your family's ability to comfortably be on a boat.
